Globally, acute decompensated heart failure episodes account for over 2 million hospitalizations per year. Admitted patients are at risk of harm due to medical error or infection. For the health care system, the financial cost of acute heart failure hospitalizations is approximately $30 billion per year. In addition, emergency care diverts resources away from elective healthcare and causes disruptions in patient waiting lists. We are developing a device for continuous, non-invasive monitoring of a patient's cardiac hemodynamic status, allowing for physician intervention before the clinical symptoms of decompensation are observed, and potentially avoiding hospitalization.
